Water Fountains - Maintenance and Care

A water fountain can add a lot of character and beauty to an outdoor space. Whether it is a small stand-alone water fountain or a large fountain in the middle of a pond, they can create a peaceful environment. With continuous flowing water and soft sounds, fountains are a soothing sight. However, proper maintenance is important to keep a fountain looking great. Good maintenance also helps a water fountain last longer.

Water Fountain Issues

Before we look at how to maintain them, consider the common challenges that water fountains face. We'll outline several here.

Water evaporation

An outdoor water fountain will be subject to water loss due to evaporation. How soon the water evaporates will depend on the weather. It also depends on the design of the fountain and whether it splashes a lot of water.

Mosquito breeding

When the pump is on, the continuous movement of water will inhibit mosquito breeding. However, when the fountain is not in use, this could be a problem.

Debris getting into the water fountain

For an outdoor water fountain such as in a garden, it is common to find dead leaves, garden insects, and other debris in the water. This not only takes away from the beauty of the fountain but can also clog the pump.

Algae formation

With all the water in the basins, it is natural for algae to form on different surfaces of the water.

Freezing temperatures

During the winters when the temperature falls, the water in the fountain assembly can freeze. If you try to use the fountain at this time, the pump might get damaged, and frozen water can create cracks in the fountain basin.

How to maintain a water fountain

To properly maintain a water fountain, follow these tips.

Cleaning the pump

The pump is an important part of the water fountain assembly and needs adequate maintenance. Always ensure that the pump is completely submerged in water. When the water level falls, replenish. Periodically, clean the pump by wiping it with a cloth. Also, clean the pump from the inside using a small brush to clean build-up from every crevice.

Replenish the water regularly

Even though it depends on the size of the water fountain and the weather, typically, you should check the water level after every 8 hours of continuous use. You can either manually fill up the basin with water or make an arrangement to automatically fill water through a tap assembly.

Clean the water fountain regularly

It is always a good idea to periodically clean your water fountain to prevent buildup and algae. Wipe the surfaces clean with a cloth. Avoid using abrasive cleaners on the surfaces. If the fountain has steel basins, avoid using bleach. If your water fountain uses copper, you can consider using car wax to coat it. This will increase the life of the fountain and keep it shining for a long time.

Don't keep the fountain off for too long

It is advised to keep the fountain running. Firstly, it is good for the pump. Switching the fountain on and off frequently will hamper the performance and life of the pump. Secondly, the flowing water will stay cleaner. Stagnant water will lead to insects breeding in them. It will also attract more debris.

Consider using distilled water for the fountain

Using distilled water can be a great idea to reduce the effort of maintenance. It will prevent surface corrosion, scale formation, and foamy water. It will also prevent algae formation.

Check the connectors

Water fountains use Power Connectors that need maintenance, too. You need robust connectors that have a high ingress protection (IP) factor. Bulgin provides water-resistant Circular Power Connectors that are ideal for use in fountains. They are easy to connect and disconnect and hardly need any maintenance at all. Highly durable and robust, these connectors are great for use with pumps.
